Therapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists in Canadian practices, starting in Alberta. A practice signs up once and invites its clinicians. There are also templates for orthopedics, cardiology, dermatology, oncology and pain management, and Alberta-specific features such as the Information Manager Agreement under the Health Information Act and, for physicians, the AHCIP billing review (beta).
Notes can be drafted in DAP, BIRP, SOAP or narrative format. Behavioural health templates cover intakes, biopsychosocial assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, consultations and discharge summaries. Psychology practices also get risk assessment notes, termination summaries and consultation letters. SpecScribe remembers your preferred format and section order. Yes. Choose “Write session notes” when you start a session, type what happened in your own words, and SpecScribe drafts the note from your text. It's useful when a client declines recording or when you're documenting an earlier visit. You review and sign the draft the same way.
Yes. SpecScribe won't transcribe a session until the patient's consent to recording and AI-assisted documentation is recorded. Your clinic, as the custodian, decides how consent is obtained; SpecScribe stores the record and checks for it before recording. If a client declines, you can write session notes instead.
Patient records are stored in Canada: the app runs in Montréal, storage runs on AWS ca-central-1, and transcription runs on a Canadian-hosted service. The app refuses to send patient data to transcription or storage services outside Canada. AI drafting runs on Anthropic's Claude API in the United States, after common identifiers are removed. Patient records are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they reach our database, audio is deleted once you sign the note, and access to patient records is audit-logged. SpecScribe is designed to support your PIPEDA and HIA obligations, and we sign an Information Manager Agreement with every practice.
Audio goes from your browser to SpecScribe's application servers in Montréal, is transcribed on a Canadian speech-to-text endpoint, and is kept in Canadian cloud storage until you sign the note, when it's deleted. Unsigned audio is purged after 30 days by default. The transcript and note are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they're saved. The Security page lists every service involved.
Our Epic connection (SMART on FHIR) is in beta: where it has been set up for your clinic, your schedule, active problem list and medications come in, and signed notes are filed back to the chart. Accuro and TELUS connections depend on vendor access for your clinic. Connect Care requires AHS approval of each third-party app, so ask us about its status. Any note can also be exported as a PDF.
SpecScribe uses Anthropic's Claude models, guided by specialty- and Alberta-specific documentation templates and prompts. We haven't published an accuracy study, so treat every note as a draft: AI-written text is highlighted in the editor, and nothing becomes part of the record until you review and sign it.
